ON THE SAME PAGE: Ways to get in the mood for Halloween in Manistee County – Huron Daily Tribune

Unseen feet make rustling noises in the fallen leaves as moonlight filters through the bare trees.

• After trick or treating, settle in with a movie for family night. “Casper Meets Wendy” (DVD) brings back an old friend and his crush as they face an unknown evil.

• “Ghost Beach” (DVD) follows kids as they encounter ghosts in a variety of settings.

• A girl must face her problems when she’s enlisted to help an elderly woman with chores in a supposedly haunted house in “Ghost Trap” (DVD).

• “The Conjuring” (DVD) and “The Conjuring 2” (DVD) are both based on cases from the files of paranormal investigators. A Harrisville, Rhode Island farmhouse is the scene for “The “Conjuring”. When a family moves into their new house, they discover a long history of deaths causing supernatural occurrences.“The Conjuring 2” is set in Enfield London where a family is terrorized by a poltergeist.

• “Winchester: Inspired by True Events at the Most House in History” (Blu-ray) tells the story of the firearms heiress who attempts to soothe the spirits of people killed by the Winchester rifle by continually adding to her home, as directed by a psychic.

• “The Haunting of Winchester House: Ghost Stories” (DVD) finds a family of caretakers desperately trying to survive in one of the most haunted places in America.

• “Scrooged” (DVD) is a hilarious take on the Dickens’ Christmas classic that features Bill Murray as a TV network executive visited by three ghosts.

• “The Woman in Black” (Blu-ray) finds a lawyer attempting to thwart the vengeful ghost of a woman intent on harming the local people.

• “Haunted Lighthouses of the Great Lakes” (DVD) shares tales of ghosts of vigilant lighthouse keepers and tragic deaths that have produced supernatural manifestations.

• Ghost stories for young readers include “The Five O’Clock Ghost” which is book four in “The Haunted Library” series by Dori Hillestad Butler. Join Claire and her ghostly friend Kaz as they search for the cause of a regular afternoon haunting.

• Ghost Attack” by David Lubar finds two children on a visit to their grandparents. Alex gets a rash and discovers he’s allergic to a ghost who wants his help to solve a mystery.

• “Ghost Cat” by Kevan Atteberry tells the story of a boy whose pet has passed away. He believes his cat is still with him as a ghost.

• Meet ghosts and get the facts straight from them in the adorable book “Ghosts” by Sonia Goldie.

• In Andrew Prentice’s “Ghost and Bone,” a story for middle school students, a boy is cursed with the ability to alter things by touch. As if this weren’t bad enough, he discovers he can turn into a ghost at will. Now two ghosts have turned up to take him for the ride of his life!

• “The Ghost of the Chattering Bones” by Gertrude Chandler Warner is part of her “BoxCar Children” series. While vacationing at a friend’s house, the siblings are asked to help solve a mystery involving lost treasure, unless the resident ghost scares them off first.

• “Ghosts of the Greenglass House” by Kate Milford has treasure hunts, old maps and plenty of ghosts as Milo looks for clues with his friends.

• Teens will enjoy “Ghost at the Window” by Margaret McAllister where time travel allows a household to move back and forth through time. Now a ghost girl from the distant past wants to share a secret and everything changes again.

• “The Box in the Woods” by Maureen Johnson a young detective and her friends are invited to investigate a cold case at a former summer camp involving four murders. Is it a good idea to stir up old ghosts?

• “Absent” by Katie Williams features three teenaged ghosts bound to the school grounds. Rumors swirl around the death of Paige until she discovers a means to clear her name. Can these ghosts find what they need to move on?

There are many ghost stories in our adult collection too.

• “The Tradd Street” series by Karen White begins with “The House on Tradd Street.” Melanie Middleton is forced to admit she can see ghosts when she inherits a historic house complete with ghosts. When a handsome writer comes to investigate the house, Melanie has more than she bargained for with hidden treasure, a housekeeper and a dog. There are five more titles in the series, each focusing on a haunted house in Charleston, South Carolina. Number seven, “The Attic on Queen Street” will be published next month.

• Heather Graham’s “Bone Island Trilogy” begins with “Ghost Shadow” and features Katie O’Hara who intuit’s ghosts. Drawn into an old murder case, Katie must find answers as the body count rises. The other titles in this series are “Ghost Night” and “Ghost Moon.”

• The “Bailey Ruth Raeburn” novels by Carolyn Hart feature a mystery solving woman who decides that a little thing like death won’t stop her from her crime solving efforts. Join Bailey Ruth as she helps people through tough times as an agent of Heaven’s Department of Good Intentions.

• Two favorite things come together in the “Haunted Home Renovation Mysteries” series by Juliet Blackwell. Mel has taken over her dad’s construction company renovating historic homes in San Francisco. Unfortunately, old houses often come with ghosts and Mel can see and hear them. The only way to get some peace is to solve the mysteries the ghosts bring so she can finish the renovations.

• Manistee County Library also carries stand-alone ghost stories like “The Haunting Ashburn House” by Darcy Coates. It explores an old crumbling mansion, inherited by a young woman who uncovers secrets better left buried. Someone or something doesn’t want her investigating.

• “The House of Secrets” by Terry Lynn Thomas tells the story of Sarah, who is haunted by a ghostly presence. Sarah accepts a position with an occult expert who offers to help her understand her predicament. She soon finds herself with a mystery to solve and no one to trust.

• “The Widow of Rose House” by Diana Biller is set in 1875. A young widow returns home with dreams of restoring the family mansion. When rumors of haunting begin, Alva refuses to believe them. But this doesn’t stop the manifestations. A professor offers help with the ghosts but Alva is reluctant to trust him. Somehow, they must discover the secrets of Rose House and lay the ghosts to rest.
